Apart from the fuel injected version, new 150cc Vespa scooters also on the cards

Piaggio India to launch Vespa FI

After starting a completely new segment of premium, retro-styled scooters in India with the Vespa range, Piaggio is now planning to introduce more modern technologies on the existing models. According to sources, working closely with Piaggio India, the company will be upgrading the current carburettor-equipped Vespa scooters with more advanced fuel injected ones.

Although, internationally the Italian company prefers to use fuel injection (FI) on its scooter range, in India it had to opt for carburettor due to the inconsistency of the fuel quality in our country. Now Piaggio has tested and tuned its fuel injection system to cope with the gasoline available here. Moreover, the company feels that having a fuel injection system will improve the scooters’ efficiency and even performance to a certain extent.

Currently, there are three variants of the Vespa scooters sold in India which include the Vespa, Vespa VX and Vespa S ranging between Rs 68,333 to Rs 74,075 (ex-showroom Mumbai). The new range of Vespa FI is expected to be priced about Rs 4,000 over the existing range of carburettor equipped scooter models and would be launched by November this year. The scooters will continue to be powered by the air-cooled 125cc motor capable of 10PS of power and torque figure of 10.6Nm, mated with a CVT transmission.

Apart from this, Piaggio India is also working on a new 150cc fuel injected engine which will be introduced later this year on a brand new scooter. This new project is closely under wraps as of now. We are trying to get more information on this. Stay tuned.
