Located globally in 170 markets with around 2300 dealerships to their name, the Jaguar Land Rover brands are synonymous with style, versatility, luxury, power and performance all over the world. Since its acquisition by Tata Motors, the JLR brand has made a speedy recovery, and for the financial year ended March 31, JLR reported a net revenue of 9.9 billion pound and profit after tax of 1.04 billion pound.
With the British marquees increasingly looking at India for sourcing a number of components, Jaguar Land Rover have now opened their first assembly plant in India at Chikli near Pune. This is incidentally the same plant that Tata Motors used to assemble Mercedes-Benz cars back in the 1990’s.
The new facility, which was officially inaugurated on the 27th of May 2011, will assemble Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles supplied in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form from Jaguar Land Rover's Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool, UK. The award-winning Freelander 2 is now on sale in India in two variants and is priced Rs. 33.89 lakh onwards (ex-showroom Mumbai, pre-octroi).

The inauguration of JLR’s first full-fledged facility outside the UK was attended by top Jaguar, Land Rover and Tata Motors officials, all of whom shared their insights on the sort of impact this new state-of-the art facility would have on the future success of the brands in India.
Carl-Peter Forster, Chief Executive Officer and MD of Tata Motors said, “Today marks a significant step in our growth strategy for the Indian market. The opening of this plant demonstrates close co-operation between the parent company Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover and we are keen to develop this further.”
The Pune Plant will be subject to Jaguar Land Rover's mainstream launch quality processes, and will be overseen by experienced manufacturing and quality managers who have moved to India from the UK.
Although, Jaguar Land Rover have not yet disclosed information about the Pune plant’s current capacity, JLR has declared that the company will be present in 12 major metropolitan cities pan India with 14 dealer outlets by September this year.
