Aston Martin has owned the Lagonda marquee since the 1940’s and ever since has reserved this rare moniker for large and exclusive 4-door saloons. The last time the Lagonda badge saw production was in the 70s and 80s when Aston Martin made a low, long and typically edgy saloon. With its low stance, sporty dimensions and a monster engine under its bonnet, the Lagonda of the 70’s and 80’s is possibly one of the most iconic and unusual car of its era.
Now though, Aston Martin is stated to launch a brand new car with the Lagonda moniker, inspired by the saloon of the past. Aston Martin’s Q customisation service has reportedly taken up production of the new Lagonda which means that this new car will not only be rare but will also be remarkably expensive and will have a large waiting period. Sources at Aston Martin say that the new Lagonda will be restricted to fewer than a hundred examples in an attempt to maintain exclusivity.
The mechanicals will be based on the Aston Martin Rapide saloon but with upgrades. The Lagonda will use Aston Martin’s 5.9-liter V12 engine with about 600PS of peak power. The old 6-speed gearbox from the Rapide is set to be replaced with an all-new 8-speed gearbox. The Lagonda will compete against the likes of the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, The Rolls Royce Ghost and the Maserati Quattroporte along with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, Audi A8 W12 and the BMW 7 Series V12.
The new Aston Martin Lagonda will surely find buyers amongst the elite due to the history and reputation of both the Lagonda and the Aston Martin brand. Going by the popularity of the Rapide in India, one might even expect to see a couple of these beautiful new Lagondas gracing the streets of India.
