Honda Motor Co announced that it has issued a recall for 4.8 million cars globally. According to the Japanese carmaker the recall has been issued owing to replace the faulty air bag systems as the inflators have a defect which could result in fatality. The faulty airbags system isn’t the fault of Honda Motor as it sourced them from Japan's Takata Corp which has been centre for of one of the biggest automotive recalls to date. Although Honda India cars are said to be unaffected by this recall, when contacted Honda Car India said that – “We do not have country specific information with us currently.”
The Takata air bag system can erupt with excess force that would result in spraying of shrapnel inside the vehicle. The airbag defect has already resulted in six deaths owing to the faulty system. The main reason for the defective Takata airbag system is that the inflators weren’t properly sealed and moisture seeping in has caused the malfunction. Honda Motor isn’t the only manaufacturer affected by the Takata airbag defect as Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co have also issued a recall for 6.5 million vehicles. Honda Motor is replacing the airbags free of cost and it would use replacement parts supplied by Sweden's Autoliv (ALV.N) and Japan's Daicel Corp.
