Its great news for Ducati aficionados as production of the Ducati 1199 Superleggera superbike has begun. One might think what’s so special in this? Well, when you are talking about the latest flagship motorcycle from the stables of one of the most desirable motorcycle brands in the world, one doesn’t require any more reasoning. The word ‘Superlagerra’ in Italian means light weight (which many Lamborghini fans already know) and Ducati has done complete justice to the word as the bike weighs in at just 177kg (wet weight).
This alongwith the 203PS power output means the bike has the highest power-to-weight ratio for any production motorcycle at 1147PS/Tonne. To achieve this stunning figure, the 1199 Superleggera employs a magnesium monocoque frame and a carbon fiber rear sub-frame and bodywork along with forged Marchesini magnesium wheels. The body panels with an integrated R-spec aero-kit has been crafted from carbon fiber while the exhaust system and the various nuts, bolts and fasteners on the engine and body has been made from titanium.
On the mechanical front, the 1199 Superleggera’s Superquadro engine now revs to an additional 500rpm and pumps out a heady 203PS of power and 134Nm of torque. Also an Ergal rear sprocket and WSBK-spec 520 drive chain have been fitted and with the stock gearing it is rumoured that the 1199 Superleggera would have a top speed north of 320km/h. To keep all that performance under check, the bike has been loaded with a plethora of electronic goodies like a new Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) which works in sync with the Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC). All this Italian exotica comes at a price as the Ducati 1199 Superleggera retails at a whooping Rs 54 lakh (excluding customs) and will be limited to just 500 units to maintain exclusivity.
