The MEMS sensor is used in a variety of products from cars to mobile phones. It was developed by Bosch GmbH 16 years ago. Two billion units of production later Bosch is still the world leader in MEMS sensors

Bosch, one of the global leaders in automobile technology and components has set a new production record for units manufactured. The component in question is called MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems). Production of the MEMS sensor began 16 years ago. The first market for MEMS sensors was in automotive electronics. Its small size, robustness and reliability have made it a trusted component to operate crucial systems in an automobile such as in fuel injection systems, airbags, ESP, ABS, etc. Over the years MEMS sensors have been integral to making cars safer, cleaner and faster. A modern car uses over a 100 of these sensors and the number is only growing.

While it took 13 years to produce the first billion MEMS sensors, the two billion mark was crossed in just three years. The reason for that is the extensive use of MEMS sensors in a variety of electronics products such as smartphones, laptops, navigation devices, microphones, etc.

The MEMS sensor consumes very little power, even less than that of a battery’s self discharge rate when the sensor is on standby. Combined to the tiny size of the sensor of 2 millimetres in length and 1 millimetre in height the MEMS sensor is ideal foe use across a wide range of products.

Manufactured by the German company via its Automotive Electronics division and its Sensortec and Akustica subsidiaries, Bosch is by far the market leader for MEMS sensors.
