The Mercedes-Benz CLS, unveiled back at the 2017 Los Angeles Motor Show, has received its first-ever update in the form of a midlife facelift. As a part of its update, Mercedes has thrown in some new features, mild hybrid tech for the 300D variant, and a cosmetic update.

“Why change something that ain’t broke,” is clearly the mantra Mercedes has followed with the new CLS. Even though it is almost four years old, the CLS still looks fresh. But a refreshed grille with chrome studs (shaped in tri-point stars) and the gorgeous new spoked alloy wheels (which could be tough to clean) keep things fresh. The aggressive faux air intakes on the front bumper add that sporty quotient.

The facelifted CLS 53 AMG comes with the trademark Panamericana grille, side skirts, even more aggressive bumpers and AMG-specific wheels.

Save for the new steering wheel draped in high quality Nappa leather (similar to the facelifted E-Class), the CLS’ interior is quite identical to the pre-facelifted model. The new open pore wood and high-gloss grey wood trim up the sense of occasion as well. Buyers can also opt from two new interior colour schemes: Neva Grey/Magma Grey and Sienna Brown/Black.

The CLS comes with a host of driver assistance features like active speed limit assist, active stop and go assist, and parking assist with an exit function!

The CLS is offered with various 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. But the highlight is the CLS 300D’s 265PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that now comes paired with a 48v mild hybrid system. It allows the 300D to coast with the engine switched off whenever possible, enhancing fuel efficiency. A pure-bred AMG variant with a 435PS 3.0-litre in-line six is also available for enthusiasts wanting a performance oriented CLS.

Mercedes-Benz India could bring in the facelifted model sooner than later considering the product offensive strategy it is currently pursuing in the country. Currently, the India-spec CLS is offered in a sole 300D variant priced at Rs 86.39 lakh (ex-showroom).
