Faulty Ohlins shock absorbers have resulted in recalls of two leading superbikes – the Yamaha YZF-R1M and the Honda CBR1000RR SP, according to reports.
Yamaha is already recalling the new R1M in Canada and Australia due to the faulty rear shock manufactured by Ohlins.
According to a statement released by Transport Canada and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, “on certain motorcycles, the rear shock absorber may not have been manufactured correctly. The piston rod nut may have been tightened before the piston had the correct full metal-to-metal contact. This could result in the nut loosening, which would prevent proper rear suspension action, and could cause poor handling that may result in a crash.”
Yamaha dealers will inspect the shock and, if necessary, replace the unit free of charge. Honda is also undertaking a similar ‘inspect and replace if necessary’ policy towards the bikes believed to be affected by the faulty part.
Yamaha India recently launched the YZF-R1M in India at Rs 29.43 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Yamaha India says the R1M is available only on specific orders and as such this recall will not affect bikes to be sold in India.
