Audi has revealed two new e-tron versions of their top-end cars – the R8 supercar and the Q7 SUV. Both are new generation models for Audi and with it, the German carmaker is announcing that green technology is now mainstream and not slow and boring at all.
The R8 e-tron is fully electric with much more capacity than the previous generation car. Audi says that the new R8 e-tron gets a newly developed lithium-ion technology which was specially conceived for a purely electric vehicle drive. In comparison to the first technology platform, the battery capacity has grown from 49KWh to approximately 92KWh. Range as a result has gone up to 450km from 215km. Energy density has almost doubled too.
The R8 e-tron develops 340KW of power and a colossal 920Nm of torque. The 0-100kmph sprint comes in 3.9 seconds and the top speed is restricted to 210kmph or 250kmph without the limiter. Audi also says that a full charge can be achieved in less than two hours.
The Q7 e-tron is a hybrid. It is powered by a combination of the 3.0-litre TDI engine and a 17.3KWh battery. The diesel engine is the same ubiquitous Audi V6 mill but with a host of updates that increases output to 262PS and 600Nm. The electric battery has a range of 56km in pure electric mode and develops 94KW and 350Nm of torque. This takes the system output to 378PS of power and 700Nm of torque. The Q7 e-tron can do the 0-100kmph sprint in just six seconds.
In standard test conditions, Audi says that the Q7 gets a range of 1,410km on a single tank of fuel. With the new generation Q7, Audi could also shave off over 300kg of flab from the mammoth SUV. The lighter weight is a mix of light-weighting and clever engineering for an SUV that is almost exactly the same size as its predecessor.
