Hyundai India has captured 16.3 percent of the Indian domestic car market in FY 2014-15. The Korean carmaker posted this best ever sales figure, just like Maruti Suzuki in a year that has been good for the car industry in general.
Domestic sales for Hyundai grew 12.9 percent from 35,003 units in March 2014 to 39,525 units in March 2015. Exports though have dipped considerably for Hyundai from 16,705 units to 10,215 units, a fall of 38.9 percent. As a result, cumulative sales in March 2015 fell by 3.8 percent.
Hyundai is riding on the success of the Xcent compact sedan to begin. The Xcent is a steady performer in the segment as it is well packaged. Hyundai topped that off with the Elite i20, the most successful car from the Hyundai stable on a monthly basis since its launch. Even the dipping Verna sales were checked with a facelift. In February, Hyundai also introduced the i20 Cross, the cross hatchback derivative of the Elite i20, which has been well received.
Hyundai has begun penetrating smaller regions of the country which have till date been Maruti bastions. With 418 showrooms and over 1,000 service centres spread across the country, Hyundai is hoping to expand its presence in the coming year.
