Motorcycle riders are always at the risk of injury or in extreme conditions, even death but there are ways to ensure safety

Wear a helmet

India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world owing to bad roads and traffic congestion and indisciplined road users. Here are tips for motorcycle riders to keep safe.

1) Wear a helmet: Despite a High Court ordinance making helmet compulsory, most motorcyclists in India mindlessly ride without one, and suffer the horrific consequences in case of accidents. Hard hats or cricket helmets are a strict no-no as these give no guarantee of safety. Open-faced helmets are slightly better thatn hard hats, as they are specially made for mototrcyclists but it still isn't proctective enough in case of a crash. Modular helmets and full faced helmets that fit snugly and have a thick layer of cushion are recommended.

2) Don’t drink and ride: Alcohol slows down human reflexes radically and is therefore a complete no-no to ride under its influence. Even a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) as low as 0.02g/dL can have a drastic affect on response times and riding ability. Take the local transport or hitch a ride with a sober friend if you are intoxicated.

3) Be alert: Accidents are unexpected so a rider must be alert at all times. Observe the vehicles ahead of and around you to anticipate their movements so you can take evasive action if needed. Riders must watch out for potholes etc on the road as well.   In India, stray animals like dogs, cattle and sometimes even birds are entitled to right of way over motorists, so be wary of them. 4) Be patient: Observe traffic laws and speed limits and consider fellow road users. Wait for vehicle to give way when overtaking; diving into small gaps can have nasty repercussions. Use the horn and pass switch to inform others of your intent. Be patient, hurry always involves risks.

5) Maintain your motorcycle: Riding safe is synonymous with the condition of your motorcycle. Ensure that the brakes are in prime condition as they are crucial to be able to stop or slow down in emergencies. Headlights and brake lights not only illuminate the road but also make it easier for other roads users to spot you in the dark.

I was riding my bullet today and almost crashed into a rickshaw. Only one side of the road was being used due to construction work on the other side, the rickshaw pulled up one the left edge and suddenly turned to the right to make a U turn. Luckily I was aleart and breaked on time...did skid a bit but managed to balance and not fall let alone crash.i wanted to share this as point 3 above (BE ALERT) I believe is very important while riding in India...U MAY TRUST UR RIDING BUT U CANNOT TRUST THE OTHER IGNORANT PPL WITH A WHEEL IN HAND....!!!RIDE SAFE!!!
