Premier Rio: First Drive

Test Drive Premier Rio

If there was a space vacant in the Indian automotive sphere, here is a vehicle that will fit it like a glove. Adil Jal Darukhanawala grabs a first drive of the new mini-SUV from Premier Automobiles on its comeback trail

Yes that's right, Rio is the name of the new mini-SUV which many car makers plain dumb ignored and it is here that an old venerable name from the motor manufacturing business hopes to reinvent itself. Let's avoid the riddles and cut straight to the chase which in this case is of Premier Limited announcing its advent back as a speciality car maker in India.

Better known eons ago for its Premier Padminis and Fiat Unos plus the eminently forgettable Peugeot 304 which pulled the company down (or was it the other way around! - the jury is out on this count), Premier under the stewardship of Maitreya Doshi, grandson of Walchand Hirachand, has embarked on a whole new way to get back into a segment of industry which his family helped pioneer in this country.

Premier-Rio_Action_2-img
First the method behind the madness and here it seems that Maitreya Doshi after the highly publicized spat with long time partner Fiat used all his business acumen to monetize his real estate holdings in Mumbai and then re-invest this into his firm's machine tool division at Chinchwad in Pune. This purely engineering-driven arm of the company began to specialize in cutting edge applications for heavy industry and has made not just a name for itself in its sphere of operation but has also managed to make the firm financially very sound. Apart from being shielded from the economical turmoil, the new business orientation also taught Premier to make do with less and this mantra has been put into place for a very lean automobile manufacturing unit at Chinchwad.

   The Rio is here

And the product with which Maitreya Doshi aims to get his firm rolling on our roads is unique as well. The basis of this vehicle, which will be sold under the Rio model name, is the Daihatsu Terios mini-SUV of late 1990s vintage. Built to the Japanese kei-jidosha class regulations which specify not just a maximum length but also the maximum width of a car to conform to very low tax rates, the new Premier Rio is a snug cozy compact small vehicle which with its very configuration has placed itself as the proverbial cat among the small car pigeons in the market!

Premier-Rio_3-img

Rights to the Daihatsu Terios were sold to Chinese car maker Zotye Auto which marketed it as the Zotye Nomad and now Premier has done a deal whereby the entire car sans the drivetrain would be brought into India as a CKD unit. Premier has resurrected its old Peugeot TUD5 diesel engine, tweaked it and even changed cylinder dimensions to make it into an engine of its own making and this along with a 5-speed manual gearbox is what powers the Rio.

The Rio drives very well, is sprightly without being over the top, and can more than hold its own with all of the A-segment hatches as well as the entry level B-segmenters. While its looks may scream SUV, its makeup and delivery is more like the smaller hatches but with rear wheel drive and an upright dominating perch which is distinctive of large SUVs. In fact, as I have mentioned before as well, this was a niche there for the taking and everyone saw right through it. Of course if Premier doesn't price the vehicle perfectly it might just score a self goal but then this was a car waiting to happen and Premier saw the opportunity.

IT'S NOT A REFINED PRODUCT. PAL HAS PICKED UP THE BODY FROM AN OLD DAIHATSU MODEL AND WEDDED IT TO A NOISY ENGINE LIKE A TRACTOR'S. THEY HAVE TO FIND A GOOD MODERN CRDI. PAL HAS TO REASSURE NEW BUYERS THAT IT'S A CHANGED COMPANY FROM WHAT IT USED TO BE DURING ITS EARLIER FIAT, PREMIER 118NE, PEUGEOT AND UNO DAYS. | Reply

I fell for the dropd dead looks and visited the showroom at Koramangala Bangalore. (3000 sq ft approx and another 3000 sqft of basement for servicing) .They refused to offer me a Test Drive Probably out of fear that I may look the other way. Anyway my last word - Never Trust anything from the Premier stable - Poor Service. Pathetic Dealer response and High on attitude. | Reply

Premier Auto like their partners in crime Hindustan Motors, are RELICS of the benevolent days of licence raj when the buyer had no option or choice except models offered with the caption TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. With the arrival of a changed economy the company brought in the Peugot but it revealed through its after sales motto, that the earlier mindset had not changed at all. I do not think one can trust the Company based on the past, however much they may be sending feelers into the market through various sources, that a new generation at the helm is a changed generation. After all, for years they have had fun at the expense of their customers. | Reply

A difference of opinion here....I too own a Siena (model 1999) and have to say that the spares etc.. are available easily - just have to know where to look. Also the car is built like a tank and seldom goes for repairs - regular service at showroom and drive it around the park...Palio, Linea and Punto are examples of the clear EFFORTS from FIAT for a serious comeback in India. FIAT FIRST is a genuine first from FIAT for roadside assistance - that too FREE for the first 5 years. Many a times, casual comments without any effort can damage a good car - the case in point with FIAT.

They will introduce a good international car and intial selling and won't do anthything for service/dealership/spare parts etc. It's like cheating the buyers and the car/brand value diminished in the indian market. This was happend for their old partners Fiat and Peugiot. Let's see what will happen for daihastu.... Without after sales service how a buyer can go for long time riding.......so, dont waist your 5L. | Reply

But I have heard there is an environmental norms that prevents the car from being sold in tier I cities like Mumbai. Is it true? Relax; Indian Customers are now lot more educated and do carry out detailed study of a new born auto through on road feedback, consumer reports, parentage and on road feedback before investing 4 to 5 Lacs in a car. In general this category of Car is still a luxury. Let a model or a company die or survive on the battlefeld; through its own KARMA.Why worry.. I would wait for the detailed Consumer review once it is introduced. Thanks | Reply

Diahatsu Terrios Old model. In this case Rio is a not the Terrios you mentioned but a Copy of it by Chinese Car Manufacturer Zyote..which in turn will be supplying the necessary blueprints for Rio except for the engine which will be a make or break for this car. I've seen this Car on a visit to Kathmandu and the streets are flooded with this car both the Original and the Copy.you can't even make out the difference between them. But the on Road presence was that of a much Costlier car Lets see how it catches up in india Especially in Hill Stations where demand for these type of cars are huge..esp in Gangtok | Reply

Premier Rio may look like an aim to resurrect the brand but a dated product with old engine technology may not be accepted by Indians - At that price point there are companies offering latest products in India that the European counterparts (Or for that matter rest of the world are enjoying) with full safety pack and the assurance of a 5 Star rating by NCAP - Old discontinued models are difficult to sell as Indian customers are now experiencing true world class products - Being a true car lover I wish Premier the very best with the Rio - But few questions that come to my mind 1. How does Premier plan to meet crash safety norms 2. Stage IV Emission from Apr 1 2010 3. Will Premier offer safety pack in the future ? Airbags, ABS ? | Reply

I don't think it is bad option. Toyota also launched their aged out product india as Qualis and it was a huge hit. If they are keeping price between 4-5 Lakhs then it is a good buy given it fulfills dreams of a SUV buyer who can't afford 8-10 Lakh priced Scorpio. They can find customers in small town SUV seekers. Also don't forget people in India still buy 10-15 old Maruti 800. :) | Reply

Is the engine also 12 years old - is it a chinese engine or the old Peuguot 1.5 cc engine - which gives out only 64 bhp where in fiat 1.3 cc engines give out 75-80 bhp power. I think the engine is a out dated one. They should have tried put the 1.3 fiat multijet eng. that would have made more sense and make the car/suv more reliable. | Reply

Premier sold two generations a car without much changes. Premier still thinks it's in the pre-car revolution era and hence selling a 12-year old car technology. I think Premier has no balls to develop a car entirely on their own. All its earlier products, including the diesel van are borrowed from someone else. Pity Premier. | Reply

Buddy, I would like to remind you that, Daihatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota Corporation Japan and is reserved to handle it's compact cars market. ICML which was Mr. Nobody, has now started giving competition in MUV market, similarly PP will rise. Adil you will have to eat your own words. Most of the popular SUVs like CRV, RAV4, Outlander were all smaller compact SUVs before growing in size with each generation upgrades. While in India we get only the fully grown super big (and expensive) versions. It has to be appreciated that Premier has got the product niche right, the same cannot be said about the product though. It looks dated and lacks sophistication that even the entry level hatches have. But this definitely a niche some of the established manufactures ought to have filled (read that as Mahindra could have built a smalled Xylo and Tata a smaller Sumo Grand or an SUV on the Indica platform!!!). the only other attempt at this segment was Ford Fusion which was positioned as a City SUV (whatever that means!!). | Reply

PAL if it agrees with me and most of people who knew the history of the co, shouldfirst win back the confidence of dealers. Peugoet was anamazing product and so was the Uno. Its the company internal problems blew up the deals. Its nice to read about co's recent accodales, and wish all the best toit for the new product and more to come. The product looks so much like the Toyota RAV 4, but that's ok to me. I just hope the product is sterdy and tough and a real long horse as it should be. Congratulations to Mr. Doshi for identifying the right gap and addressing it. Keep on moving. You have rudely the big co's topay attention to your invention. All the very best of luck. | Reply

Great choice to enter in ! I had commented in this column in the past that there is literally no rival to Maruti Gypsy or other way round, we, the auto lovers have no choice for a cheaper (and working) SUV / MPV. Daihatsu had actually many models and even MMC had mini Pajero in Japan, bringing those models from Japan to India is costly affair. Thanks to PAL's attractive pricing, I am sure this lone section in Autos will now have some good competition hotting up. Auto makers who doubt PAL, please pay close attention, take my words, RIO will be a definite (though moderate) success. | Reply

Premier sucks - no support at the end of 2 years (max for this products life cycle)Lastly we should shun zigwheels to produce wuch a biased review - wonder how much money was paid for thsi marketign purpose. I have driven all sorts of cars from BMWs to Nissan 350/GTR, to Corvetters and as well as Padminis and Ambys. This RIO sucks bigtime. | Reply

Premier chose the correct segment to make its come back. But the problem is with its choice of partner. The Chinese make horrible products. The car looks like a Wagon R and you can make out the quality of the plastics in the pictures itself. I dont think the car will find any takers in India considering the current benchmarks. But what it has done is that it has opened up a new segment. I hope to see other manufacturers enter this segment. I still feel that a diesel Gypsy will be a big hit. Cant fathom whats keeping Maruti away from it! | Reply

If Premier can hold the price point and the quality it may have a winning combination. Diesel engines by nature are stronger and more lasting, as long as the owners change and filter and oil at regular intervals. The SUV is very impressive looking and will compete well with Honda and Hyundai. Good luck and good job done Mr. Doshi. | Reply

Good news actually. Looks very cute. This is the same Zotye nomad available in china with little different engine specifications. They introduced a 5008 fully loaded version, which is avalable with a cheaper price of around 70000 cny(chinese yuvan), that is around 470000 in indian rupee. In my opinion, If PAL really wanted to make a bang with this suv, they should give atleast similar or more features MM given in their SCORPIO/ZYLO,And bhp should be little more around 90’s.PAL can easily do this because they are tied up with Zotye | Reply

Nilesh, i'd suggest you get you car fact right first. The RIO is based on the Daihatsu Terios (google it if you like). I'd go a length further and say that the RIO is a Terios except for the engine. There is and can be no way that RIO is inspired from the Yeti. The daihatsu Terios was born and probably well thorough its age long before the Yeti was born. | Reply

I will never trust a car from Premier Automobiles. Rio may be a very good 4 wheeler, but so was Fiat Uno, which lost its image because of Premier and Fiat is still suffering because of them too. Automobile industry is very sensitive. Bringing a good car form outside is not enough. Company need a strong management to actually sell it. Premier has not learned any lessens form the past. They have always brought a old model form outside to India and hoped it will do good. They have done it this time also.People at Premier are pure business men. • S Menon (29 October 2009 11:05)
    1. The failed Peugeot was the 309, not the 304.2. Kenda are a leading manufacturer of tyres, not a brand to be laughed at - I'm not sure why you recommend a switch to MRF.3. The vehicle is an exact copy of the Malaysian Perodua Kembara. Perodua was a company partly owned by Daihatsu and yes the Terios was its basis but this vehicle is a carbon copy of the 2000 Perodua Kembara.4. I dont understand why the Rio makes sense to you - for just a few thousands more you can probably get a Safari LX with a whole lot more space, a much more powerful engine and obviously a lot more bang for your buck. Why should someone buy a Premier in this day and age? Unless one has some misplaced sense of loyalty to a brand that used to be built in his hometown.5. YOu havent mentioned that the TUD5 will NOT meet emission norms (Stage 4) and therefore the vehicle cannot be sold in major cities. What sort of vehicle should one expect from a manufacturer who takes a decade old body from one manufacturer and a still older engine from another to assemble a 'vehicle'? This is not 1985, the Daihatsu is not the Fiat 124, a reworked and turbocharged Peugeot is not a Nissan sunny engine and Premier Motors is not an automotive manufacturer anymore. Get real. | Reply

its actually Daihatsu Terios which was invented by Japanese car maker Daihatsu. Its true that china also producting same vehicle but under China Zotye Auto Co. Ltd as Zotye 2008 and also as Dario Terios (in China) Daihatsu Taruna (in Indonesia)Perodua Kembara (in Malaysia). Also as TOYOTA CAMI in some part of the world. Recently, in Japan second generation of the same vehicle has been introduced which is Jointly developed by Toyota and its been called as TOYOTA RUSH. Mr Yadav, every one is entitled to his own opinion. Kudos 2 ur patriotism (also, may be ur brand loyalty), but calling names n epithets regarding an opinion offered by a knowledgeable person (as per the facts shown in the analysis). It needs a lot of courage n conviction to call a spade a spade without embellishing it with lot of flowery language. Most of our Auto journos don't have that courage or conviction. May be they don't want 2 kill the product outright before it has got a chance 2 prove itself. Let the product come into the market. Indian buyers r nobody's fools. They allot appropriate place 4 it. | Reply
