Bajaj Auto has launched the 2009 version of its flagship Indian performance bike, the Pulsar 220 DTSi. The bike has been introduced at a very competitive price point of Rs 70,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) - something that we had predicted just before the bike was launched. The new bike is officially the fastest Indian motorcycle on the streets, a fact that has been confirmed by the ZigWheels.com team of reviewers and test riders. There's more on it in our blistering road test, but for now, we'll focus on the highlights of the new bike.

The 2009 Pulsar 220 DTSi is much more than just a non-fuel-injected version of the DTS-Fi. Visually, the bike has an all-black treatment with black forks, swingarm, alloys and engine paint. Other visual tit-bits are chiseled 3d graphics, a redesigned console background and revised clip-on handlebars.

Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi

The changes are starker in the innards of the bike. The new engine shares the same dimensions as the 220 DTS-Fi, but now breathes through a 32mm venturi carburetor with an auto-choke feature. Power output has been pegged at 21.04PS @ 8500rpm, and though the torque remains the same at 19.12Nm, it now comes in at a higher 8000rpm, signaling the revvy nature of the motor with ample torque to go with it.

With newfound performance gains and the enticingly affordable price point, Bajaj has continued with the Pulsar tradition of providing power to the people with the new 220 DTSi as well. To find out everything there is to know about the bike though, you'll have to check out our out-before-everyone-else road test!

noo the new pulsar 220 is dull. it comes with better short pickup but lacks the highest speed. it isnt smoother and the engine is noisy. low in performance and looks | Reply

Why does'nt Bajaj give it 4 valves instead of 2valves. As they have done with 150cc, then it will be a winner. | Reply

Hi guys,I went to Bajaj showroom and did a test drive for 220 DTSI 2009 edition. It is F****** fast. A guy riding a yamaha RX 100 was showing off and was going at a pretty good speed. (You know what I am going to say...) Yes I over took him in about 5 to 6 sec...I took that much time because I took a moment or two to start my bike and make myself comfortable.. I wanted to see the expression on that guys face...anyhow t Bajaj salesman behind me was holding on to his life...Well i warned him that i would pick up speed and apply sudden break...but i guess he just took me for some simple guy who plays it safe....I would give 5/5 for this beauty.Only one thing though...because it has fixed head light i couldn't exactly make out how much turn i want when i wanted to cut lane.. I think it will take a few days to get the proper judgment.....Oh yeah one more thing...i booked it today and selected the bike...i will get it tomorrow with all insurance and registration...no delay like pay advance then wait for 1 month then again delay and such nonsense...In kerala things work like clock work otherwise people here will not think twice before flexing their hands...All car and bike dealers know that...so its punctuality at its best. LOL !!!!!!!! If anyone has doubt about pulsar 220 post your comments ...i will be glad to help...Chao guys and Jai Hind !!!!!!! | Reply

The new BAJAJ PULSAR 220DTSiwell it did surprise me to see the new technology coming in the Indian market. The bike has definitely created new standards but, the same old design disappoints you. The P220 will clearly soar to new heights in the Indian markets. But what I am looking forward to is P250 that is equally competitive n terms of pricing and an upgrade to the same old design is heavily required for the whole Pulsar series of bikes. Hope next time bajaj does not limit itself with just Face lifts. | Reply

Hi Jazzy, you have struck a sore chord here. I own both a Karizma and a Pulsar 200 and find both of them to do good in differenet ways. The Karizma is a relaxed lazy sort of bird while the P200 is a rabble rouser which can run rings around the Karizma 10 times out of ten. Many Indian bikers get carried away without making any distinction between the types of bikes we can buy these days. Perhaps that is a best indication therefore as to why Hero Honda adverts keep on talking to this day about the "ALL NEW KARIZMA" that the Pulsar 200 and 180 have been powering ahead of it in sales. And speaking of vibes, just see what the Karizma does when she goes all rough ended when the throttle is wound up? Wake up and taste the coffee or is that too much Jazz for you sonny boy! | Reply

hey I booked a pulser-220 since 1 month.I desperately need this bike soon.If it's lunched in delhi than when it will come to showroom inn bangalore..How many days I have to wait to ride this high speed bike | Reply
  • Jazzy (25 June 2009 14:01)
Yo Shiv! I ride a Karizma every weekend with my buddies most of whom own Pulsar 200s/220s. I guess you wouldn't know coz it doesn't seem like you ride much. You would've known what it feels like to be left in the dust straight-line uphill. And you would never have felt the vibes on the Zma when you thrash her for any sort of performance. Every bike seems refined at 40 km/h, but every bike is not for sport riding! | Reply
  • Shiv Gowda (25 June 2009 11:21)
If Bajaj thinks they can expect us to lap up the new pulsar which like all other bajaj products will be tested by the buyer , enduring all the agony of an unrefined product.A pulsar cannot match the refinement of a Karizma / Honda.Period!!! When can we see the Ninja 250? What can you expect from a company that cannot keep up its word?Rahul Bajaj had anounced that they will be launching this in May 2009 [the great Bajaj tradition?]...tsk tsk...remind me of the 220 launch...all gas and no action..hamara bajaj???? Time they stopped taking us Indians for granted by releasing such sub-standard products. | Reply

Hey Raghu, or to drive this point home Raghuram, bike makers develop bikes for the road first and then for racing second. What works well on road need not necessarily be great on the tract and vice versa. Th Apache RTR might look good on track because of the track modifications the racing team of TVS does to win with next to no competition. Sadly out in the real world the Apache handling leaves a lot to be desired. Yes the earlier Pulsar 220 DTS-FI was a bit soft but trust you me there is no better handling and stable bike in the land today than the Pulsar 220 DTSi. And anyway competition is what improves the breed. Let the others come up FIRST to match this bike and till then let us wait for the bike developed jointly by Bajaj with KTM and we will see where this battle heads to. | Reply

Hey Shailendra old man, you still flogging that ol' loveable warhorse are you? Why do you ask for a tuned RD350? Are you afraid that a standard tuned bike wouldn't do the trick? Well I also have had my time on RDs but before you get too senti about bikes it has to be an equal contest so that the RD is no humiliated. For one, we would need to have either the RD wth the full complement of existing emission controls. This will restrict it big time and when you factor in its handling with its bulk you will find yourself in a sorry state. Please understand exactly what I am trying to convey rather than feel hurt. The RD was and still is an inconic motorcycle, one which the best for its time. Unfortunately the yardstikc has moved and there is no reason for anyone, and that includes you, to stay in the past. Sorry couldn't resist but had to answer this. Don't know why but Zigwheels reportage of bikes has always fascinated me and my mates in Jamshedpur no end. Staying on this very idea, what sort of speed could an unrestricted and say devoid of emission legislation handicapped Pulsar 220 DTSi be capable of? | Reply

  • Hemant Dalvi (23 June 2009 18:04)
Sharmaji, you are emotionally weak and it shows in your blabbering. The karizma has been constantly creamed in the performance and showroom sales race by the Pulsar ever since it debuted and yes the R15 was indeed an expensive top dog for awhile but their day and time has come and gone and there is a new king of the performance hill. But what is the use, you probably wouldn't understand. I am heading out to my dealer here in Delhi and trying out the bike rightaway and maybe if he gives me a good trade-in for my Unicorn I will definitely go for this new 220 Pulsar. | Reply

Yet another build hype and disappoint by Bajaj.Next year it will go up to 22.07 bhp and the top speed will increase by about 2.2227 kmph and we'll see a full preview and pre-launch marketing by zigwheels and all the auto sites.WHY don't they launch a 250 with about 30 bhp, FE forget..? I'm tired of waiting for the Ninja 250 to come out.It looks like a deliberate ploy to starve bikers of good bikes :( | Reply

How about a price shock Mr S banerjee? And with a bike sorted out finely like this it is the ride and behaviour that matters, whether it be with twin, triple or single shocks. Not meant to belittle you pal but see the overall picture with performance on offer, price and then see whether you want to pay in excess of Rs 1.05 lakhs for similar performance and a shock less at the rear end. Depends whether you would buy a bike at this price with a shock less or is there more than meets the eye here. | Reply
  • S Banerjee (23 June 2009 12:21)
Extremely disappointing...why could they not replace those shocks in the rear with mono shocks...thats the minimum I expected...forget about getting a V-twin...:-( | Reply
