Honda will launch the Mobilio on July 23 and we expect prices closer to the Rs 6 lakh mark for the base petrol variant. The Mobilio is one of the most anticipated launches in the second half of 2014. It will take on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova in the seven-seater MPV segment.
Since the Ertiga’s prices start at Rs 5.8 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi for the base petrol variant and the Mobilio feels a notch premium and larger than the Maruti MPV, this latest Honda offering is bound to give India’s largest carmaker sleepless nights. The price gap as was initially expected in the range of Rs 60,000 extra may not be that much.
Honda is having a great run in the Indian market since the launch of the Amaze and it was boosted multifold with the City’s domination in the C-segment. Positive sentiment around Honda is high at the moment and there’s very little that can go wrong with the Mobilio to fail. It shares the same engines and gearboxes with the City, the design is borrowed from the Brio and Amaze (at least the front half) and the interior also shows some very cost-effective parts sharing. Also, since Honda’s both plants at Greater Noida and Tapukara are now running at full steam, capacity constraints shouldn’t be an issue like it was towards the beginning of this year.
Honda will also launch sportier RS variants of the Mobilio that’s going to add plenty of style to the otherwise functional MPV segment. The RS variants create desirability around the Mobilio that promises to go down well with individual car buyers. One aspect lacking in the Mobilio is a middle row captain seat equipped variant, besides which the MPV puts hardly a foot wrong. Read our comprehensive review here
