The Mahindra Thar is a vehicle most of us love due to its sheer raw appeal. That said, one of the biggest drawbacks of the Thar have always been its interiors. As we reported a few weeks ago though, the Thar will soon get an all-new interior package and for the first time, a car sporting the same has been spied.

From the pictures, it seems that Mahindra has spent most of their money on an all new dashboard mould, a welcome change to the rather old and lacklustre dashboard that the Thar originally came with. The Thar will get a set of three large round dial clusters which will house the speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauges. The centre console too has been given a redesign with a large THAR moulded plastic badge taking centre stage above the new round AC vents. The new Thar also gets a moulded centre console around the handbrake and gear shifter and four wheel drive levers.

The new Thar is also likely to come with new, more comfortable seats both up front and at the rear. We also expect Mahindra to adopt some exterior updates to the new Thar like slightly wider wheel arches, newer tail lamps and slightly updated accent pieces on the body. That said, the retro body shape that characterises the Thar as a reincarnation of the original CJ Jeep is expected to stay unchanged. Mahindra currently sells about 400-500 units of the CRDe version of the Thar. We expect sales to rise nearer to the 1000 units mark if Mahindra adapts these changes and updates to the Thar.

No changes are expected on the mechanical front. The Thar is expected to come equipped with its existing range of engine options which include a 2.5-litre DI unit that delivers 63PS of power and 182.5Nm of torque, and a 2.5-litre CRDe engine that churns out 105PS of power and 247Nm of torque. The Mahindra Thar currently retails between Rs 4.82 lakh and Rs 7.69 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). We also expect the Thar to soon come with a CRDe 4x2 version which appeals more to the city slicker as compared to the off-roader.
