New engine comes in time to take on more powerful competitors in the segment

Hyundai launches Eon 1.0-litre

Hyundai has launched the new 1.0-litre Kappa engine in the Eon at Rs 3.83 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. This comes right in time to take on the impressive Datsun Go that we found to be quite a challenger in the entry-level hatchback segment.

The Eon 1.0-litre delivers 69PS of power at 6,200 rpm and 94Nm of peak torque at 3,500 rpm from it’s three cylinder heart. The engine weight has been kept in check by using an aluminium head and engine block. Hyundai says that a low-friction timing chain keeps NVH levels low as well. The 1.0-litre Eon has an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 20.3kmpl.

The Eon though will be available only in the one below top-end Magna+ variant. It is about Rs 25,000 costlier than a 0.8-litre Eon of the same spec. The Eon Magna + variant gets a passenger side rear view mirror with internal adjustment function, tilt steering, a two-din audio system with Aux-in and USB connectivity and a rear parcel tray. It also gets larger 13 inch wheels over the lower variants.

The Eon had the design, features and price quite right but disappointed with its underpowered engine. With a choice of the 1.0-litre engine option, it’s a more formidable entry-level hatchback in the Indian market.
