Yamaha to recall 56,082 units of Ray

In what is being touted as the biggest recall the Indian two-wheeler industry has ever witnessed, India Yamaha Motor has announced that it would replace the handlebars on the 56,082 units of the Ray it has sold free of cost (including labour cost). This step has been taken by the Japanese manufacturer after it found that the strength of the handle bar is not up to the mark due to welding defects. The issue was highlighted during one of the field studies carried out by Yamaha in which it was felt that this flaw may affect the scooter's riding characteristics. Also Read: Yamaha Ray First Ride

India Yamaha Motor released a statement on the issue, "The company has taken this voluntary step after it detected insufficient strength in the handlebar of some scooters due to inadequate welding. The recall campaign on 56,082 units of Ray would cover the handlebar fitted in the scooters that may in the worst case scenario have an impact on the steering operation,” India Yamaha Motor released a statement on the issue

The Ray is Yamaha’s first scooter for the Indian market and is marketed as a female oriented scooter. However, company officials said that the recently launched Ray Z hasn’t been affected by the handlebar problem and they wouldn’t be recalled.  To synchronise the voluntary recall, Yamaha would be starting a ‘Ray Refresh Campaign’ via which customers will be contacted through mail as well as phone calls to replace the affected part. This campaign would be active at all its dealership spread across the country.
