Yamaha Motor India has inaugurated its latest research and development unit in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. The facility is the second of its kind in the country and would help the Japanese manufacturer execute high-tech research on its current and future products smoothly.

The unit falls under the administration of YMRI (Yamaha Motor Research & Development India Pvt. Ltd) and is being established in the premises of the company's manufacturing facility. Yamaha India believes that the new unit will ensure optimal utilisation of resources at both the locations, and enhance its capability and capacity.

Yamaha is working towards its commitment to ‘Make In India’ and has invested Rs 66 crores in setting up the centre. These funds are part of the 1500 crore investment plan that the manufacturer intends to execute by 2018.

The new unit is expected to play a vital role in the development of future Yamaha products for Indian as well as foreign markets. The company could also utilise it to increase localisation of some of the parts of its performance bikes, thereby bringing the costs down.

Yasuo Ishihara, managing director, YMRI, said, "The objective of the new center is to develop models for India and eventually, the global market. The Chennai center shall be the second main pillar for YMRI. By collaboration with the current development power in Surajpur center, we aim to strengthen more of the cost reduction and attractive product development in the Chennai center. The key role of this India integrated development center is to develop optimized specifications for the Indian market."
