Volvo is slowly but steadily turning it around in India and the car holding the baton right now is the new XC90. Volvo has sold 350 units of the luxury SUV already, and all these are of the top spec Inscription trim. Volvo will only commence selling the Momentum trim early next year as there is high demand for the Inscription variant. Volvo has already ramped up its network to 16 dealers this year from about 8 showrooms in 2014.
The XC90’s starting price is Rs 64.9 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi for the base Momentum trim. The Inscription variant costs Rs 77.9 lakh, Rs 13 lakh more than the base variant, yet there luxury car buyers prefer it due as it comes loaded with features. There is barely anything to spot between the two variants on the outside – integrated roof rails and dual tail pipes being the only add-ons. You also get larger 20 inch 10 spoke wheels to 19 inchers in the Momentum variant.
The interior is where there is a world of difference. The Inscription trim XC90 gets higher quality Nappa Leather, vented seats all round, walnut wood finish dash and door trims, heads-up display, and the biggest of all features – the Bowers and Wilkins 19 speaker surround sound system.
