The pollution levels in India have been rising rapidly since the past few years. Keeping this scenario in mind, Swedish carmaker Volvo is planning to introduce plug-in hybrid powertrains across its entire range.
During the launch of the company's latest offering, the XC90 Excellence T8 Plug-in Hybrid that took place a few days ago, Volvo Auto India managing director Tom Von Bonsdorff stated: “Volvo has the capability of launching its entire range in plug-in hybrid version. India will look to launch all the plug-in hybrid variants of the car line portfolio relevant to the market here, which will be launched globally over the next 4-5 years.”
Now let's talk about the plug-in hybrid SUV that Volvo launched on Wednesday - the XC90 Excellence T8 Plug-in Hybrid. Mechanically, the car will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged motor, coupled to an electric motor, that generates 412PS of power and churns out a massive 650Nm of peak torque. And with all the latest feature and immense power, Volvo has aggressively priced the SUV at Rs 1.25 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). That's a lot!
Bonsdorff also stated: “Globally, our ambition is to have one million electrified cars cumulative by 2025. If taxation is favourable for green cars, India will contribute to this ambition.”
With this technology, Volvo claims that the XC90 will be a fuel economy car, giving more than 40kmpl. The SUV also comes with a pair of charging stations that can fully charge the car's battery within 150 minutes. Reportedly, more than 50 bookings of the XC90 have already been made and seeing this, the manufacturer is now preparing a fully-electric vehicle, which could make its way to Indian shores in the near future.
