Toyota Innova Crysta regains its title, dethrones Maruti Ertiga

Toyota Innova Crysta moving shot

Clinching its long lost title of the highest selling MPV in India, the Innova is back where it belongs. As you most probably know, the car is an all-new iteration of the highly successful Innova, now badged as the ‘Innova Crysta.’ By achieving this feat the Crysta has surpassed the sales of the Maruti Ertiga (formerly leading this segment), which is available at almost half its price.

If the reports are to be believed Toyota registered sales of 7,259 units in the month of May, which is 44 per cent more than that of the number recorded in May 2015. Though, more interesting is the staggering growth in the number of Innovas sold in the month of May 2016, when compared to April 2016. Toyota has registered a month-on-month growth of 70 per cent with 4,269 units sold in April.

It is very clear from these numbers that the Innova has regained its fading image, not only in terms of the features its upgrade offers, but also in terms of sales numbers. This too, when the Japanese manufacturer has been losing as much as 7 per cent of its sales volume from the Delhi diesel ban.

The Crysta incorporates a long list of features, starting from the two engine options, namely the 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder and the 2.8-litre inline four-cylinder one, both diesel. The 2.8-litre motor comes with a standard 6-speed automatic, while the 2.4-litre is available with 5-speed manual. Toyota is also mulling a petrol engine to make the car accessible for the NCR population.

The entirely new exteriors get features like projector headlamps, LED DRLs, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, etc. The insides get improved quality of materials, touchscreen infotainment system, as much as 20 cup holders, more space, etc.

The Crysta starts at around Rs 13.8 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 20.7 lakh (price, ex-showroom, New Delhi), which makes it less eligible to sell like a mass volume car. However, the popularity the Innova has gained over the years seems to have overshadowed its high price point.
