With the Fortuner's popularity on a rise, Ford Endeavour's newly acquired position as the best-selling premium SUV could be threatened

New Toyota Fortuner - Action

The Toyota Fortuner has started to gain pace in the Indian market. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the all-new Fortuner has already gathered a crowd for itself, resulting in a long waiting list. The SUV has registered over 5,400 bookings and more than 16,000 enquiries in just two weeks since its launch in the country. Deliveries have begun but the demand has led to a waiting period of about eight to 10 weeks on some models. Also, as expected, the most booked colour is white, while the ‘Grey Metallic’ has not been very popular. The earlier model of the Fortuner had recorded almost one lakh sales in the country and over 1.3 million units globally.

The Fortuner has been launched with both a petrol and a diesel engine option. The 2.7-litre petrol engine has an output of 166PS/245Nm whereas the 2.8-litre diesel engine has an output of 177PS/420Nm (MT)/450Nm (AT). The petrol motor can be had with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, with just a 4x2 drive. The diesel, on the other hand, can be had with either six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, with a choice of 4x4 drive. Even in terms of appeal, the all-new Fortuner comes loaded with LED projector headlights, LED taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels and a glass C-pillar. Safety wise, the SUV has seven airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control (VSC), hill-start assist and hill-descent control.

Expressing his views, Mr N. Raja, director & sr. vice-president, sales & marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, "We are overwhelmed with the response that the new Fortuner has garnered in just two weeks’ time since its launch. We have noticed a significant customer preference towards the automatic transmission and trying our best to deliver the product to the customer at the earliest so that they don’t have to wait too long. We are glad that the new Fortuner has been able to make such an impact even after the festive period is over. This reiterates the popularity of the Fortuner which has maintained its number one positioning in the segment ever since its launch in 2009. We whole heartedly thank our customers for their appreciation and their trust that they have placed on the brand as well as the product.”
