OMG650. That's all we have to say.

Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet

If you think the world has seen enough of bonkers G-Wagens, you're horribly mistaken. There's a new one on the block, this time tinkered by the hoity-toity elite at Maybach. Meet the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet, a G-Wagen that laughs at the concept of rationing, and possibly assumes global warming is a hoax.

Because that would explain why it gets the monstrous V12 engine from the boffins at Mercedes-AMG. They've strapped on two turbos for good measure too. The result is 630PS of power and 1000Nm of torque. That should be enough to warp time, we're sure. But that's not the point. The G650 Landaulet is supposed to be a regal elephant, not a derby horse. It's about class, panache, extravaganza and opulence – not wheelspins, powerslides and burnouts.

Primarily because it is the size of an average apartment in Mumbai. Secondly, we're sure the 325/55 R22 (G-U-L-P!) tyres cost as much too. But, that's not the point. It's a Landaulet, which means there's a foldable fabric roof over the rear occupants' head. Under the rear occupants' bottom are seats lifted straight from the S-Class, that get an adjustable calf rest, and also recline like first-class lounge seats in an aeroplane. There are two leather-swathed tables tucked away in the rear centre console, lest you wish to write a cheque, or sign contracts worth as much as the GDPs of a few countries combined.

Just so you aren't disturbed in your business endeavours, the Landaulet features a glass partition that divides the front and the rear half of the cabin. At the touch of a button, the glass can be made opaque as well. The cross-member that holds this slab of glass is also home to not one, but two 10-inch displays for entertainment. The rear centre console also houses three switches that let the occupants set the mood lighting and open/close the roof.

While the rear occupants lounge in comfort, people at the front get the option of mucking about. Under all that leather and swanky tomfoolery lies a ridiculously capable machine. Big engine aside, the G650 gets portal axles and 100 per cent differential locks borrowed straight from its mental cousins – the G63 6x6 and the G500 4x4². In case you're wondering, it gets 450mm of ground clearance. Basically, it will eat rough roads for breakfast.

The G650 Landaulet, Mercedes-Maybach claims, is "a unique combination of (a) luxurious chauffeur saloon and off-roader". We aren't entirely sure if something like this needed to be built, but we're glad it’s been created anyway. It will be limited to 99 units and will debut in Geneva. I know where the Sheikhs are heading this summer.
