Tata Safari Storme To Replace Maruti Suzuki Gypsy For Indian Army

The Indian Army is set to replace its current line of Maruti Suzuki Gypsy with the Tata Safari Storme. Recently, an order (of triple digit units) has been placed for the Safari Storme. The number of Safaris for the Indian Army is expected to multiply by vast figures in the near future.

There are currently thousands of Gypsies that are being used by the Indian army and one of the main reason for this replacement is the diesel-powered engine of the Tata Safari Storme. The Army version of the Safari Storme will be manufactured at Tata Motor’s Pune plant. The car will feature army-spec structural reinforcements so that it can endure challenges such as marshy grasslands, deserts, snowy terrains, and rocky mountainous climbs and descents. There are chances that Tata might just export the army-spec Safari Storme to other countries as well.

Under the hood of the standard Tata Safari Storme is a four-litre, 2.2-litre, turbocharged diesel engine. This engine is available in two states of tune, depending on the customers' choice. Both the 4x2 and 4x4 VX 400 NM variants pump out 156PS of power and 400Nm of peak torque and come mated to a six-speed manual transmission. While the other version of the SUV delivers slightly lesser power (i.e. 150PS of power and 320Nm of torque) and comes coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox.
