Tata's big bet for the year is inching closer to launch. Bookings for the sub 4-metre compact SUV will open on September 11 for a token amount of Rs 11,000. That said, if you visit a Tata dealership with a cheque book in hand, they'll be more than happy to have you part with your money. So, let's turn this around a bit - here are four reasons you should consider booking the Nexon.
Styling
Yes, it isn't your everyday drawn-with-a-ruler boxy SUV. It's got a modern crossover look that screams for attention. We particularly like the smoked out projector headlamps with daytime running lamps, the ceramic line that runs across the side and the turbine-like 16-inch alloy wheels. Oh, lest we forget - you get the option of contrast-coloured roof too.
Safety
Dual airbags, anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX child seat mounts at the rear are standard across the range. You also get brake assist and corner stability control to keep you safe. We'd have loved to see Tata go all out and equip the Nexon with six airbags or maybe even rear disc brakes, but that's not on the agenda this time round.
Engines
The 1.5-litre diesel motor makes 110PS and 260Nm, which translates to a lot of giggles if you push it. Then, there's the turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol that dishes out 110PS and 170Nm. While you'll have to flog the hell out of the motor, it can be quite fun too. There are three driving modes - City, Eco and Sport - that actually work, and there's a 6-speed manual gearbox. Ah, yes, I hear the ones screaming for an automatic. Expect that next year.

Infotainment
The boffins from Harman have gone to town with the Nexon as well. They've worked their magic in the Tiago and the Tigor already, and the SUV is just as good. But, more than that, it's the new 6.5-inch touchscreen we're even more happy with. The response is quicker, the legibility is better and it gets physical keys to use it on the go. There's Android Auto on offer, and Apple CarPlay will be made available soon.
Yes, we've already driven the Nexon around some sweet winding roads in Kochi. If you haven't seen the video linked at the top of this report, be sure to head over to the text review. Finally, we're expecting Tata to price the Nexon aggressively. A sub-7-lakh rupee starting price can be expected, with the range topping out at about Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Game on!
