Suzuki is gearing up to launch its latest quarter-litre motorcycle for the international market. According to reports the upcoming Suzuki GSX-R250 will make its world debut at the upcoming INTERMOT motorcycle show in Germany in October or the EICMA motorcycle show in Italy by November. Patent images of the bike had leaked few months ago giving us glimpse of the design details of the new full-faired motorcycle. The new motorcycle will be called as the Suzuki GSX-R250 in the international market while in India it would be renamed as the Suzuki Gixxer 250. The styling of the 250cc bike has been based on the litre-class flagship – GSX-R1000. The sporty tank, chiselled tank and the edgy tail section make the new Suzuki bike visually attractive. The full-faired design language should appeal to the youngsters who will be the main target audience for the bike.
The biggest mystery regarding the upcoming Suzuki Gixxer 250 is its engine details. There are two possible powerplant options – first being a liquid-cooled parallel twin motor as seen on the Inazuma 250 or a newly designed single-cylinder mill. We expect the Suzuki GSX-R250 to be powered by a single-cylinder engine which will be crucial in keeping the cost low and it should be good enough for around 25-28Ps of peak power. The powerplant will be mated to a 6-speed transmission. The Suzuki GSX-R250 is a sports tourer like the Honda CBR250R and not a track focused machine like the KTM RC200. The raised clip-on handlebar and centre-set footpeg should result in a sporty yet comfortable riding posture for highway riding. This should also make it a good touring option.
The frame for the upcoming bike looks similar to the unit found on the Suzuki Gixxer sold in India. The diamond type unit is suspended on telescopic front forks and a monoshock unit at the rear. We can expect the Suzuki GSX-R250 to be launched in India by mid-2017. It will compete against the Honda CBR250R and the KTM RC200 in our two-wheeler market. Watch this space for more details.
