St. Columbas School,Delhi wins SAEINDIA Jet Toy Olympics

Air propelled cars made out of Cardboards, Enthusiastic Kids and a whole lot of tracks to test their inventions for a number of skill events where St. Columbas School, New Delhi outshines all.

Winner of the 4th SAEIndia AWIM National Jet Toy Olympics

Over 100 of sixth and seventh graders from 26 schools participated in SAEINDIA’s fourth AWIM (A World In Motion) National Jet Toy Olympics. St. Columbas School, New Delhi bagged the first prize.

In the event, children had been given two and a half hours to built three working models out of the material provided to them. Along with this, they also had to create a presentation of their working demo model which would explain the purpose of their vehicle, their team name, and their slogan. The winning team will represent India in the AWIM International Jet Toy Olympics at the SAE World Congress in April 2012. Dr. Farooq Abdullah felicitated the winning teams. Shitij Malik, Ankit Sharma, Bhavishya Bhatt and Paanshul Jerrel of St. Columbas won Rs. 20000 with the trip to Detroit for the International Event.

Teaming up with SAEINDIA to facilitate this initiative, Mr. I.V. Rao, Managing Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. said, “We are proud to be associated with this initiative. As largest car manufacturer our objective through events like AWIM Jet Toy Olympics is to connect with students in their formative years and provide them an out-of-classroom experience to understand the basics of science and engineering.”

With a distinguished panel of judges from the Automobile Industry, the toy cars were judged on were taken through different performance criteria like maximum distance traveled, weight carrying capacity, maximum speed, maximum time and accuracy. Also, adding to the points, were the presentation skills done by the students after the performance skills done by their toy cars. To add to this, the balloons fixed on toy cars had to be of eight inches using the templates which were checked at every trial with three trials for each event.

Different types of nozzles were also provided for the different tasks for the teams and their cars. Adding to the learning skills, children also got a hands-on experience of presentation skills and teamwork as well along with technological skills.
