The Ssangyong Business Group bought an automobile company called Dong-A Motor in 1986 and changed its name to Ssangyong Motors. Last year Mahindra and Mahindra acquired 70% stake in Ssangyong Motors. Following the acquisition and Ssangyong Motors exiting court receivership in March this year the company has been selling more than 10,000 units every month. Last month in July Ssangyong sold 10,763 cars in total, of which 3,506 cars were sold in the domestic market while 7,257 cars were exported. Figures indicate a growth of 46% over the same period from last year.
Demand from Russia and Latin America have jumped overseas shipment by 57% over the figure for the same period from last year. A strong service network and the launch of new models has given domestic sales a boost of 28% over the same period from last year.
"After the first half when we reported the best performance since 2007, we went on to achieve a monthly sales record in July. Given that we are poised to resume exports to China in August, this upward trend will likely intensify during the second half of this year,” said Mr Lee Yoo-ill, President and CEO Ssangyong Motors.
Ssangyong Motors plans to expand its domestic sales by increasing promotional events for customers to test drives of their vehicles before a purchase decision is made. This is a strong indicator of Ssangyong Motors confidence in their vehicles.
