Skoda is leaving no stone unturned in creating a buzz for the upcoming Kodiaq SUV. The Czech automaker had previously teased glimpses of the SUV's exterior, and has now dropped some more teasers - of the interiors this time - just a day prior to its global unveil. Let's take a quick walkthrough to see what's on offer.
Just like the exteriors, there's an evident crystalline design theme here as well. First glimpses reveal that the dashboard carries an extremely functional layout, with a large central screen. The design is in line with what we have seen on Skodas recently, including the Superb and the Octavia. It is predominantly black, with large gloss-black accent pieces on the doors and the dash.
As expected, the features endowed on the Kodiaq seem to be shared with its sedan sibling. Features include a multi-function steering wheel, three-zone climate control (featuring a separate zone for the second and third-row occupants), ambient lighting and leather upholstery as well. It also gets ventilated seats for the driver and co-passenger and a touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Skoda's MirrorLink tech. The system is paired to a Canton audio system, which we believe could be the 12-speaker setup borrowed from the Superb.
Skoda showed off the practical side of the Kodiaq as well. The SUV features three rows of seating. What's interesting to note is that the third-row gets a 50:50 split and the second row gets a 40:20:40 split. We think this adds a lot of versatility to the big Czech. Skoda had pointed out that the bootspace is close to 2000 litres with the last two rows tucked away. Smaller details we managed to spot include a 12V socket, a 3-point seatbelt for the third-row occupants, and that the third-row folds flat to the floor.
The Kodiaq will debut on September 1, 2016. The SUV is very much a plan of Skoda India's strategy for 2017, so expect to see one in the neighborhood Skoda showroom in a while. For our markets, the Czech automaker is likely to consider the tried-and-tested 177PS 2.0-litre diesel engine, and have optional 4x4 as well. When launched, the Kodiaq will lock horns with the Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Ford Endeavour. It is an uphill battle, but the Skoda sure seems decked out for the job!
