Here's what we know about Skoda's upcoming SUV

Skoda Kodiaq

We recently previewed the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq in the Czech Republic. The car is based on the Vision S concept that debuted at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Being a pre-production model we could only get a glimpse of the car, but however, could not take it for a spin. This car is ready to hit the Indian markets by next year, and will battle the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Here's what we know about the upcoming brute from Skoda.

Will it be spacious?

The Kodiaq will have three rows of seating that will accommodate seven occupants. Notably, the Vision S concept was a 6-seater. With all three rows in place, boot space is a modest 225-litres. But, fold away the last two rows and you will get 1780-litres of total space to tug your luggage along.

What are the dimensions like?

This car will measure around 4.7-metres and 1.88-metres in length and breadth respectively. For reference, it is as long and slightly wider (by 0.04m) compared to the Toyota Fortuner. Wheelbase is rated at 2,791mm, that is a full 100mm more than the Octavia.

What's under the hood?

Skoda will be offering a wide range of engines to choose from in the global markets. However, the 2.0-litre TDi diesel and a 2.0-litre TSi petrol units are likely to be offered for the Indian market. The petrol variant will get a 6-speed manual and an optional 7-speed DSG transmission, whereas the diesel variant will get a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, just like the Superb.

Can I take it off-road?

Of course. Skoda has confirmed that the Kodiaq will feature an 'off-road button'. The manufacturer categorically mentioned that the SUV isn't meant to be a hardcore off-roader. But, it will be able to handle a little mud-plugging.

What about the gadgetry?

The Kodiaq will borrow a lot of features and tech from its sedan sibling, the Superb. The feature list will include leather upholstery, automatic climate control, fatigue detection, in-car WiFi and a wireless charger for compatible smartphones. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink will also be on offer.
