Royal Enfield will unveil its first adventure tourer bike, the Himalayan at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle show

Royal Enfield Himalayan

Royal Enfield (RE) took a bold decision by launching the Himalayan earlier this year. The Himalayan is RE’S and our country’s first indigenously developed adventure motorcycle. The iconic Indian two-wheeler manufacturer is expanding its global footprint, and it was clear that the Himalayan will also be sold in various new markets. Siddhartha Lal, CEO for Royal Enfield had announced that Royal Enfield will be showcasing the new Himalayan at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle show, scheduled to take place in Italy next week. The above announcement also signals the fact that the adventure tourer offering will go on sale soon in the European market. With demand for small displacement, lightweight and easy to use adventure bikes in Europe increasing, the timing for Royal Enfield couldn’t be more apt. Royal Enfield will have to adapt the Himalayan for the European market which means the engine has to be Euro-4 emission norm compliant and ABS has to be standard. Official sources confirm the bike to be Euro-4 compliant hinting at its foray into domestic markets. Meanwhile the source also confirmed that all other Royal Enfield models sold in Europe will be Euro 4 compliant by march 2017.

The styling of the adventure bike has been kept bare and basic to reduce unwanted weight and also less damage to the motorcycle in the event of a fall. The design gives preference to function over form. While windscreen and pannier mounts are standard on the motorcycle, the saddle has been scooped to make the ride height as low as possible (800mm) to make the bike more accessible for average for Indian riders.

The Himalayan is powered by an air-cooled, 411cc single cylinder engine which makes 24.5PS of power and 32Nm of torque. The engine has also been fitted with a counter balancer to reduce vibrations and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox that drives the rear wheel. The tyres are dual-purpose off-road, on-road tyres exclusively developed by Ceat mounted on 21-inch spoke wheels in the front and 18-inch spoke rims at the rear. The bike weighs 182kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 15 litres.
