Revolve Technologies has developed a specially optimized engine management program for hybrid electric drive buses that is set to give an enhanced fuel efficiency as well as lower CO2 emissions. In fact the Revolve hybrid electric bus offers the lowest CO2 ratings ever recorded for a double decker bus at a stellar 10mpg.

Based out of Essex, Revolve Technologies is a leading engine development and engineering solutions provider. The company has been supporting the Northern Ireland based Wrightbus on a major hybrid drive performance program which includes the Gemini 2 HEV double decker vehicle. With this technology, Wrightbus is looking at addressing public transport needs in an eco friendly manner for the UK market at present. The company already has 20 units of its bus in service in the London area alone and is looking at adding more to the fleet.

The Wrightbus hybrid system consists of a 2.4 litre diesel engine (from the Ford Transit) which operates as a generator to the electric drive system. Revolve engineers have been able to predict load and speed changes in advance and in doing so they are able to alter the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) rates in order to lower the emission levels. The entire system works as there is a greater control over the engine and this allows for the company to optimize the performance under varied conditions.

The capabilities for such technology have already been proved as the Wrightbus is employed on routes in London. Revolve Technologies is looking at expanding the hybrid programme in order to create further inroads for this segment. It's a growing market for hybrid buses, and hybrid technology will go a long way in helping save the environment.
