The upcoming Renault Kwid will face stiff competition from Hyundai’s cheapest offering, the Eon. We take a closer look at the two to see how the battle each other in terms of interior and exterior design, features and space

The Hyundai Eon is one of the most popular cars in India with brisk sales every month. One of the biggest competitors to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto family, the Eon will go head on against the upcoming Renault Kwid. As we saw in our recent comparison, the Kwid pretty much trumps the Alto in almost every aspect, be it interior or exterior design, features and of course, space. So how would it do against the Hyundai? Well, read on to find out.

Exterior Design

The Kwid is a new type of small car, one that we have never seen in India. A micro-SUV of sorts, the car showcases a design language which is almost exactly opposite the one seen on the likes of the Hyundai Eon. The new Renault Kwid for example gets a raised look which is coupled with a side plastic cladding in black and a chunky side panel on the doors. The large and aggressive SUV-esque grille combined with the central logo too looks aggressive and the overall dimensions too suit the car well.

Comparatively, the Eon is typically Hyundai with its tall boy proportions and fluidic design language. Being a few years old too has its disadvantages with not a lot of people flocking towards the Eon when it comes to sheer design prowess. That said, it does have a distinctive front grille, swept back headlamps that tends to give it a likeable look.

At the rear too the small dimensions of the Eon goes well with the curvy design and elongated tail lamps. Compared to the Kwid that isn’t very conventional looking though, the Eon does look a little dated. That said, the Eon is certainly a better and more modern looking package than the likes of the Alto K10. The same curvy look continues on the side of the Eon too with a distinct line that stretched through the waistline of the car. The Kwid on the other hand is a little more conventional but does have a more raised and aggressive look that gives it the upper hand.

Interior Design

When it comes to the interior design of both the Kwid and the Eon, it is more difficult to choose a clear winner. Where the Eon has a very well styled interior with a distinct centre console flanked on both sides by a silver styling feature on both sides. The silver theme continues on the buttons too with a centrally mounted screen. The Kwid on the other hand gets the same touchscreen infotainment system that the likes of the Duster get. We personally love the way it is set up and are looking forward to using it in the Kwid too. Neither car comes with climate control though.

The two tone theme continues on the dashboard with a grey top section and a beige bottom half that gives an airy feel to the whole cabin. The smaller AC vents on the top too go well with the overall design. Comparatively, the Kwid employs a more angular dashboard with a large central console setup with a grey theme and a gloss black centre console.

When it comes to the instrument binnacle, the Eon and the Kwid look very different. Where the Eon is simple and conventional with an analog console, the Kwid features an all-digital panel. The panel has a digital readout for the speed mounted right in the centre, a fuel gauge and a digital tachometer that reads distinctly. The two prong steering wheel design too is very conventional in the Hyundai whereas the Renault gets a chunkier wheel with well designed and detailed elements.

Space

In terms of overall space, as with the Alto, the Eon is not very large on the inside. The Kwid on the other hand is much bigger on the inside due to its larger dimensions and overall size. Although there is a decent amount of space in the front and the rear of the Eon, the Kwid is just a tad bit more spacious. Both cars have a comparable level of head room though due to their taller design but we think when compared the Kwid’s rear might have a little more shoulder room.

When it comes to an overall package though, the Eon with its forward design and well styled interior mught be one of the biggest adversaries for the Renault Kwid alongside the Alto.
