The Kwid has been so successful that Renault India now has 4.5 per cent share in the Indian car market

Renault India’s blockbuster has yet another milestone under its belt. Renault’s most affordable offering has been so successful that it has sold over 1,30,000 units since launch. This is a reflection of the growing acceptance of the Kwid among the first time car buyers.

The hatchback managed to unsettle the long-reigning king of the segment, the Alto 800. Features such as the digital instrument cluster, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and the humongous 300-litre boot clicked with the masses at large.

To support the rising demand, Renault India has been proactive in introducing new variants as well. For instance, a 1.0-litre motor found its way into the Kwid’s engine bay last year to take on the Alto K10. To cement the Kwid’s positioning as a city-slicker, an AMT variant was introduced shortly after. This helped the Kwid in expanding its presence in India, so much so that Renault India's share in the passenger vehicle market grew to 4.5 per cent by the end of 2016, registering triple-digit growth in the process.

The Kwid portfolio is complete, so do not expect any major changes or revisions in the near future. That said, Renault is contemplating developing a mini-SUV as well as a compact sedan based on the same CMF-A platform as the hatchback, which should be worth looking out for.
