Global NCAP conducts fourth round of the crash test

Kwid GNCAP test

Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) announced the crash test results of the Renault Kwid and the Honda Mobilio. The results of the tests were a mixed bag.

Renault Kwid:

Results for India’s ‘car of the year’, the Kwid, "surprised and disappointed" Global NCAP. The car, in its standard version, offered  without airbags, was tested by Global NCAP earlier this year in May. In the test, conducted with and without an airbag, the car scored zero stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection.

This time, the Kwid has been evaluated again in the frontal impact test and still gets just one star for adult occupant protection. The safer Kwid includes an airbag only for the driver and a seatbelt pretensioner for the driver’s seat. The test showcased that there was high chest deflection, which explains the one-star rating in the driver seat.

David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP said "Renault has made limited progress, they should be offering their one star car as the standard version not an option. Honda too have shown that with two airbags they can achieve 3 stars. These safety systems should not be options."

Honda Mobilio:

On the other hand, the Honda Mobilio was tested in the basic version. The car had a strong structure but still got zero stars for adult occupant protection because there were no airbags.

On requesting, Global NCAP, allowed Honda to test the Mobilio equipped with double airbags and this time, the car achieved three stars for adult occupant protection. Hence, a stable structure along with airbags was reaffirmed to be much more reliable during a fatal car crash.

Ward also added that "Renault and Honda make safe cars in other markets, they have the know how to make all their Indian cars much safer. We expect them to start doing so now."
