Renault India shows no signs of slowing down. The French brand announced yesterday that its baby boomer, the Kwid, had clocked 1.3 lakh units in sales. In a bid to better the figure, the manufacturer has introduced the mid-spec RXL version of the Kwid 1.0 and the Kwid Easy-R (AMT), priced at Rs 3.54 lakh and Rs 3.88 lakh, respectively.
Previously, the 1.0 and the AMT was made available only in the top-spec RXT variant. Renault cited the fact that close to 80 per cent of the buyers opted for the top trims. Sumit Sawhney, CEO and MD at Renault India, said, “Kwid has proved to be one of the most successful vehicle launches in the Indian automotive industry and it continues to set new benchmarks in the compact hatchback segment. Having seen a highly favourable response to the powerful – Kwid RXT and RXT (O) 1.0L SCe and convenient – Kwid RXT (O) AMT, we believe there is a lot of potential in the market for derivatives of these versions."
The move is clearly aimed at garnering higher volumes. "With the introduction of Renault Kwid RXL 1.0 SCe, we aim to make our 1.0L offering more accessible to customers, especially across tier II-IV markets, as we focus on consolidating our presence in India," added Sawhney.
The RXL variant misses out on the 7.0-inch touchscreen, replacing it with a modest single-DIN audio player with USB, Bluetooth and AUX inputs. It also skips features such as front power windows, fog lamps, on-board computer, and a remote locking to keep costs in check.
Here's a quick recap of the specs. The Kwid 1.0 and the Easy-R are powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that develops 68PS of power and 91Nm of torque. ARAI-rated fuel economy stands at a respectable 23.01kmpl for the manual, and 24.04kmpl for the automatic. You can head to our reviews to know what the Kwid is like to drive.
The Kwid has been a runaway success since launch, clocking high sales figures month-on-month. This figure is likely to go further north, considering there's a more affordable variant with the bigger motor, and more importantly, the AMT.
