Since its launch two months ago, the Toyota Innova Crysta has already started to churn out good sales numbers and has reclaimed its title of highest selling MPV in India. Currently, available in two diesel engine options (2.4-litre and 2.8-litre), the Innova Crysta will now be offered with a petrol variant as well. Toyota has started to accept bookings for the petrol variant and deliveries will begin from August. The petrol variant of the MPV will be available at a starting price of Rs 14.7 lakh as per the company’s official tweet.

The petrol variant of the Innova Crysta will be powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder motor. The engine has been indigenously developed by the R&D department in collaboration with the Japanese engineers. After its official launch in India, the new engine will also be introduced in other international markets. The company hasn’t disclosed any details yet regarding power and torque figures. The petrol version of the Innova Crysta will either be offered with the 5-speed manual gearbox or the 6-speed automatic transmission. Toyota used to sell the previous generation Innova also with a petrol engine variant, but due to consistently poor sales, the company had taken it off the shelves.

With the introduction of the petrol variant, Toyota will be able to sell the Innova Crysta in Delhi/NCR and Kerala that are currently experiencing a ban on registration of diesel vehicles powered by engines upward of 2,000cc. It will also allow Toyota to cover up for the losses it had to bear due to the ban.

Talking about sales figures, Toyota had sold 7,259 units of the Innova Crysta in the month of May followed by 7,500 units in June. Customers are already facing long waiting periods of almost three months in view of which Toyota has increased the production of the MPV from 6,000 units to 7,800 units per month.
