Nissan India has issued an official statement announcing its decision to discontinue the sales of their X-Trail SUV and 370Z coupé in India. Nissan states this move as a deliberate decision to focus on their locally manufactured car models. The Japanese car manufacturer will however, continue to sell their Teana luxury Sedan. The company’s manufacturing unit in Oragadam, Chennai currently manufactures a host of Nissan cars such as Micra Active, Micra, Sunny, Evalia and Terrano which are currently on sale in India. Although the company mentions in their statement that they plan to focus on the locally manufactured car models in India; the negligible sales of the now discontinued cars can be seen as one of the reasons behind this decision.
Nissan has been constantly trying to expand its roots in the Indian market in the past few years. X-Trail SUV and 370Z coupé weren’t competitively priced owing to its entry in the Indian markets via the completely built unit (CBU) route. Nissan could sell only 156 units of the X-Trail SUV back in 2012. Things further worsened for this car when its sales figures dropped down to seven in the year 2013. There were no buyers for the 370Z coupé last year. All these reasons can be cited enough for Nissan India to discontinue the sales of their X-Trail SUV and 370Z coupé in India. This move, is an indication that Nissan is making way for the Qashqai crossover, which will be coming to India soon. In fact, the SUV segment is a focus area for Nissan post the launch of Terrano. The Qashqai is a five seater car and is is based on the new CMF (Common Module Family) Renault-Nissan Alliance platform.
