Manufacturing milestone achieved by the Renault Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai is just over a year

Sales and production figures have suddenly become a cause for celebration amongst a diverse range of auto manufacturers. Some of the more recent ones include, the sale of 100,000 Yeti’s globally and more importantly for India, MSIL hitting the 200,000 sales mark with the Estilo hatch.

While, this is a mark of the industries healthy growth and rising purchasing power amongst a newly empowered middle-class (at least in India), news about the Nissan Micra having now sold over 100,000 units worldwide should be reason for celebration, not just for Nissan, but also for India’s maturing auto buyers, who after decades, now finally see the value in investing some extra cash on a car that needs to be driven to truly understand its prowess and technical superiority.

Congratulating the Nissan team working at its Chennai plant on achieving this milestone, Managing Director and CEO of the Chennai Plant, Kou Kimura, added: “I am very proud of the effort that our Chennai staff along with our suppliers have put in to produce 100,000 Micras in such a short period of time. Today’s announcement not only reflects Micra’s popularity - both domestically and within export markets - but also Nissan’s long-term commitment to India.”

Where the future production of the Nissan Micra in India is concerned, Renault Nissan’s massive production facility in Chennai will continue to expand its manufacturing capacity, ultimately reaching an overall plant capacity of 400,000 units at full ramp up.

The Japanese car maker plans to export the Micra to over 100 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. To date nearly 70,000 units have been shipped from the nearby Ennore deep water port.
