Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover revealed the all-new Land Rover Discovery during the 2016 Paris Motor Show, which was held in September. It will go on to replace its predecessor, which was in production from 2009 till 2016, and will mark the beginning of its fifth generation. While the British car firm has listed all the variants of the new Discovery on its Indian website, it is unknown which variants will finally be offered once the car goes on sale in India.
The new Discovery is based on a monocoque chassis with an aluminium-intensive construction – a set-up that makes it 500kg lighter than its predecessor. The newness isn’t limited to the chassis, though, since the Discovery 5 also gets a new powerplant range to storm ahead of its competition. It features a 2.0-litre, four-pot Ingenium diesel engine that pumps out 240PS of power and 500Nm of torque. If those figures aren’t good enough, Land Rover will offer a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder TD6 mill that produces 256PS of power and 600Nm of torque. Transmission duties for both engines will be assigned to an eight-speed automatic transmission. A completely mad variant boasting the 340PS Si6 petrol engine will also go on sale, but is unlikely to be offered in India.
The Discovery gets its name from its ability to tackle just about any kind of terrain. The new-gen Discovery is no exception as it features a maximum ground clearance of 283mm and a water wading depth of 900mm. Land Rover’s renowned Terrain Response System, which adapts the 4WD tech through various driving modes, also helps the new Discovery to keep moving when the going gets tough.
As you’d expect, the Brit carmaker has packed the car with creature comforts which are sure to keep the passengers busy. There’s a 10-inch ‘inControl Touch Pro’ infotainment screen which is coupled with a 10-speaker Meridian sound system. Apart from that, leather upholstery, heated seats for all three rows and Intelligent Seat Fold tech make the feature list.
Land Rover hasn’t revealed a specific launch date for the big SUV, but it is expected to go on sale sometime in the second quarter of 2017. Price wise, the new-gen Discovery is likely to fall in the Rs 1.2-1.4 crore bracket.
