Tata Tigor XM Coming Soon

The Tata Tigor has not been able to make waves the carmaker expected it would in its category since its launch in June 2017. On the plus side, it is currently the third highest selling car in its segment. In a bid to attract more customers, Tata is getting ready to launch a new variant to the sub 4-meter sedan lineup.

The new Tata Tigor XM will slot in between the base XE and mid-level XT variants and will be available with both the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder 85PS/114Nm petrol and the 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder 70PS/140Nm turbo-diesel engines. It will also get the same 5-speed manual transmission used in the other variants.

The addition of the XM variant will plug the significant price gap between the XE and XT variants. The difference between the petrol-powered XE (Rs 4.59 lakh) and XT (Rs 5.28 lakh) is Rs 69,000 while the difference between the diesel-powered XE (Rs 5.41 lakh) and XT (Rs 6.31 lakh) is Rs 90,000.

The Tata Tigor XM will get more features over the base variant but not as much as the XT. Some of the probable inclusions are as follows:

- Steel wheels with full wheel covers
- Manual central locking
- Power windows on all four doors
- Speed-sensitive auto door locks
- Follow-me-home lamps
- LED fuel gauge
- Full fabric seat upholstery
- ‘Theatre-dimming’ interior lamp

The Tata Tigor XM petrol is expected to be priced around Rs 5 lakh, ex-showroom while the XM diesel is expected to cost about Rs 6 lakh.

In terms of safety features, it is not known if Tata will offer ABS in the new XM variant. Currently, it is only available from the XT variant onwards. Dual airbags are only offered on the top-of-the-line XZ and XZ(O) variants.

It also remains to be seen if Tata will plonk in the convenience-boosting AMT gearbox in the petrol variants of the car considering the same is offered in its smaller hatchback sibling, the Tiago
