Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has confirmed that it will be launching the new X-Trail SUV in India before the end of the current fiscal year. The company had first showcased the new X-Trail at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The X-Trail will be the first SUV in India that will be powered by a fully hybrid powerplant. The news was confirmed by the company's operation head yesterday.
The new Nissan X-trail hybrid is currently sold the Unites States where it has garnered a favourable response from buyers. For India, the hybrid SUV will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Japan.
Speaking on the new offering, Guillaume Sicard, president, Nissan India operations, said: "Over the next five to 10 years, Nissan will evolve into a global brand and in India you will see more and more international success from Nissan."
The SUV is currently undergoing tests in India and will be offered with a petrol engine coupled to an electric motor. The company claims that the X-Trail hybrid will be capable of returning a mileage of 20kmpl.
The company has been tight-lipped about the price of the SUV but has mentioned it to be significant. With the introduction of new technology, Nissan aims to achieve a market share of 5 per cent by 2020, which is currently below 2 per cent.
Nissan has a production facility located in Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The plant currently utilises 80 per cent of its production capacity, which is of 4,48,000 units annually. Nissan hopes to have the facility operational at full capacity in the next two years. Currently, Nissan exports over 1 lakh units and is one of the largest exporters from India.
