BMW has unveiled the seventh generation 5-Series for the year 2017 that will replace the current model. The athletic business sedan will make its global market debut in February 2017. The new 5-Series can be described as a shorter and muscular version of the 7-Series which could be just what customers might be looking forward too.

The German manufacturer has extensively adopted the BMW Efficient Lightweight design concept that has allowed engineers to shed weight by up to 10kg, thanks to the increased use of aluminium and high-strength steels. The new 5-Series carries a formal yet athletic body line that continues to impart the look of a sporty business sedan. Wearing a sleeker kidney grille, the glass of the twin circular headlights extend towards the grille, seamlessly merging, highlighting the width of the car. LED headlights are now standard across all variants and with the BMW Selective Beam option the anti-dazzle high-beam will provide a range of astounding 500 meters. The circular DRLs now extend towards the grille, contributing to the wide stance of the car. At the sides, the car gets a ‘hockey stick’ highlight underlining the doors that continue towards the rear. The tail lights of the new 5-Series now stretch towards the sides. The slim L-shaped LED bars in the tail light compliment the width of the sedan. All variants of the new-5-Series will come with twin exhaust pipes.

Moving to the interiors, the new 5-Series comes with extended storage options with more legroom for rear passengers. New updates include comfortable seats with massage function and four-zone climate control with discreet scent cartridges for fragrance. The business sedan is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive system that covers functions like navigation, telephone, entertainment and vehicle functions that are displayed on the 10.8-inch screen. The full-colour head-up display now sports a 70 per cent larger projection area providing all the required information on the windscreen.

Under the hood, internationally the new 5-Series will be available with two diesel engine and two petrol engine variants. For the petrol model, a 2.0-litre inline-4 and a 3.0-litre straight-six, engines have been newly developed based on the modular BMW Efficient Dynamics family of engines. For the Indian market, BMW is likely to introduce the ‘530i’ which will be powered by the 2-litre motor that develops 250PS of power and 350Nm of torque. In terms of performance figures, the car will be able to accelerate from 0-100 in 6.3 seconds and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.

For the more powerful ‘530d’ variant, the straight-six 3.0-litre oil burner is capable of producing 265PS of power and an impressive 620Nm of peak torque. BMW claims the new ‘530d’ has been improved by 13 per cent as compared to its predecessor.
