Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS: The S-Class’ Future In Detailed Images

After a variety of spy shots and teasers, Mercedes-Benz finally unveiled its EV concept called the Vision EQS at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show. It is essentially what an all-electric iteration of the S-Class would look like, but far more than what meets the eye. Here’s a detailed look.

At first glance, it’s quite evident that the exterior design is one of the standout features of the Vision EQS. It sports a design so sleek that you could mistake the model as a one-piece body. 

The EQS’ illuminated front-end further accentuates Mercedes’ futuristic approach to car design. It starts with a grille that consists of 188 individual LEDs on a black panel along with digital headlights that lends a 3D effect to the front area. And that’s not the only illuminating feature on the grille as the traditional Mercedes three-pointed star is also illuminated as well.

A closer look at the sides reveal the sleek body design of the EV concept which could also be mistaken for a model that’s straight out of a TRON movie. It’s interesting to note that the clean side profile sports a protruding chrome-like side skirt that looks more like a step.

The unique illuminated design philosophy in the EQS continues with a sleek 360-degree blue strip that separates the two-tone black finish. Other nifty additions include massive spoked wheels that’s surprisingly more in tune with high-end models of today. 

At the rear, Mercedes has gone for a unique tail light setup with 229 LEDs around the bodywork shaped like miniature three-pointed stars. Other unique bits aside from the ‘Vision EQS’ engraved at the rear, include the rear windshield that blends in with the black finish to top off the clean design.

On the inside, the EQS sports a layout that is typical of concept cars with a dashboard that blends into the front of the cabin. It is also tech laden with a host of digital screens in and around the dashboard. 

Mercedes has equipped the EQS with autonomous systems up to Level 3 as well as a future iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX system.

Interestingly, the interior upholstery of the EQS consists of a combination of traditional and modern materials that include DINAMICA microfibre made from recycled PET bottles. It also makes use of artificial leather with a  surface similar to Nappa leather. For the roof liner, the material used is a high-quality textile created by recycled "ocean waste" plastic.

The EV concept  is powered by electric motors at the front and rear to produce 488PS and 760Nm. It is capable of completing the 0-100kmph sprint in under 4.5 seconds. The twin motors propel the EQS to a top speed exceeding 200kmph.

The EQS is not only powerful but efficient as well with an operating range of  700km. It comes with 350kW charging capability that can recharge the batteries to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes. 

Thus, Mercedes has certainly planted a goalpost for its rivals on what to expect from its future electric cars. However, only time will tell whether most of this technology is carried forward to future models. But we can safely say that Mercedes-Benz is in good shape for the future.
