Mercedes-Benz GLE400 4MATIC

Mercedes-Benz has added yet another variant to the GLE line-up, with the addition of the GLE400 4MATIC. Priced at Rs 74.90 lakh, it is the only petrol-powered SUV in its class.

Aesthetically, there is no distinguishing the petrol variant from its diesel counterpart. The neutral design is carried over as is, and elements such as the full LED headlamps, trademark two-slat grille and the clean lines make sure you don't mistake the GLE for anything else. The interiors are identical as well, which means you get all the bells and whistles you will ever need. The package includes leather upholstery, memory seats for driver and co-driver, an electric sunroof and Mercedes' eight-inch COMAND infotainment unit paired with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon music system.

The biggest change, of course, is the new petrol engine. The V6 motor dishes out a healthy 333PS of power and 480Nm of torque. And, while the diesel variants got the new nine-speed gearbox, the petrol engine soldiers on with the old seven-speed unit. It also gets the whole jingbang of features that the diesel variant gets including the air suspension and the dynamic select that has 'Slippery' and 'Off-Road' modes in addition to the standard Eco, Comfort and Sport. On the safety front, one gets Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist, Active Parking Assist (with a 360-degree camera) and Brake Assist in addition to the six airbags, anti-lock brakes and ESP.

Mercedes-Benz says that the GLE has been an 'outright bestseller' for the brand. Notably, the GLE400 is the fourth variant of the SUV on sale today, accompanied by the GLE250d, GLE350d and the GLE450 AMG Coupe.
