The new diesel will sit in the middle of the range and give buyers the option of a less expensive and more efficient mill

The extended-wheelbase model of the E-Class seems to have clicked well with the buyers. Launched back in Feb this year, the E-Class has now regained its position as the bestselling Merc in the country in the first quarter of 2017. Currently available with a 2.0-litre petrol (E200) and a 3.0-litre diesel (E350d) motor, Mercedes will now add a smaller diesel engine to the E-Class in India - the E220d, on June 2, 2017. The E200 is priced at Rs 56.7 lakh and the E350d costs Rs 70.15 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. The E220d will bridge the approx Rs 15 lakh gap there is between the current models, and is expected to cost about Rs 65 lakh.

The E220d will feature an inline four-cylinder, 1,950cc diesel motor which will likely produce 194PS and 400Nm, a deficit of 64PS/220Nm from the E350d. It will come mated to a 7G-Tronic Plus transmission sending power to the rear wheels. This current diesel engine in the E-Class powers the flagship model. It is a 2987cc V6 motor which produces 258PS/620Nm and transmits power via a 9G-Tronic gearbox. The petrol motor is a 1991cc inline-4 motor which produces 184PS/300Nm and is mated to the same transmission as the diesel.

In terms of features, the E350d is loaded with not a lot, but a few more luxury-focused features than the petrol counterpart. It gets the AIRMATIC suspension package whereas the petrol only gets the traditional suspension system. In terms of safety, the petrol gets ABS, ESP, airbags, traction control, rear reversing camera and parking sensors, but the diesel goes one step further and gets a 360-degree camera which is paired to the Parking Pilot system. Also, the chauffeur package, which lets you control the front passenger seat from the rear seat, is only available on the diesel.

The E220d is expected to be on par with the features of the E350d and be priced closer to the diesel than the petrol. It will continue to rival the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series in the market.
