As is the way with the world of supercars, any supercar sold in the market has to take part in various race series. McLaren decided to launch a hardcore version of their all new road going supercar the MP4-12C. Read on to know more

McLaren have announced that 20 of their MP4-12C GT3 race cars up for sale to race teams and the common man alike have all been sold out. These cars are not road legal and therefore will enter various race series in 2012. McLaren themselves is preparing to enter two of their race cars in the Blancpain Endurance Series race at Magny Cours on the 27th of August this year. Production of the MP4-12C GT3 has been limited as McLaren GT wants to develop close relationships and provide ongoing engineering support to its customers.

McLaren GT developed the racing version of the MP4-12C in a couple of months this year. The racing version of the road going McLaren known as the MP4-12C GT3 was developed and was followed by its debut race in the British GT Championship at Spa-Froncorchamps this July. Three MP4-12C GT3 race cars completed the gruelling 24 hour race successfully.

The Project Manager for McLaren GT, Andrew Kirkaldy, said, “The new 12C GT3 has gone from its first ever shakedown to a 24 hour endurance race in a matter of a few months. That is a huge achievement for the car and its new componentry, as well as the team responsible for its development. The technological expertise we have in McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive is now being introduced to a different level of motorsport by McLaren GT.  Since the launch of McLaren GT we have been overwhelmed by the number of enquiries received to purchase the 12C GT3.  Our new customers are leaders in GT racing, and we’re confident that we will deliver to them the most efficient, reliable and easy to drive car among the competition when it lines up on the grid next year

McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing have collaborated for the development of the MP4-12C GT3. Suppliers for components of the new racing car include past and present Formula 1 suppliers which such as Mobil 1, Michelin, Akebono, Ricardo and McLaren Electronic Systems. An interesting note to end with would be that the steering wheel in the MP4-12C GT3 is the exact same one as the one Lewis Hamilton uses in his current Formula 1 car.
