Speaking about the new automatic variants of WaonR R S Kalsi, Executive Director Marketing & Sales, MSIL said, “WagonR is one of the strongest brands in the Indian car market and it has been one of the top five selling cars in the country. WagonR will be the third brand from our portfolio to get the acclaimed Auto Gear Shift technology. By introducing the AGS in a popular car like WagonR, we aim to democratize the AGS technology so that more customers can enjoy the convenience of automatic gear shift without compromising on fuel efficiency and at an attractive price.”

The AGS is also known in India as AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) where an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator automatically performs clutch and shift operations, making it an ideal system for congested city driving. The big apprehension Indian car buyers have over automatic cars is their poor fuel economy, but thankfully with new-age transmission this issue is being addressed. The Maruti WagonR is still powered by a 1-litre K-next engine, but the company claims to have optimised the ECU calibration to improve fuel efficiency claiming a mileage of 20.51kmpl, which is the same as the manual transmission. Apart from the new Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Stingray AMT, the company offers automatic transmission option in other small cars such as the Celerio and Alto K10.
