India's largest car manufacturer plans to introduce more hybrid tech products into its line-up.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS

In order to address the increasing environmental concerns in the country, Maruti Suzuki is planning to bring in more products with hybrid technology which will be more fuel efficient and hence kinder to the environment.

"As a market leader and a responsible corporate citizen, we are fully sensitive to our duty towards the environment. We were the first ones to launch mild hybrid products with reasonably good volumes. This process of hybridisation will be expanded further in the next few years," Maruti Suzuki Manging Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said in his address to shareholders in the company's Annual Report for 2015-16. He further added that the company is providing factory fitted CNG cars to the consumers and is determined to make all efforts to expand their penetration on the Indian roads.

Mileage from CNG powered vehicles normally falls in between the petrol and diesel variants. Although, a CNG-powered vehicle cannot beat the diesel-powered motor on mileage, it is considerably better, fuel-economy-wise, compared to petrol.

Regarding the upcoming research and development centre at Rohtak, Ayukawa said: "The first few facilities have been commissioned and in the coming three years we will witness more expansion. If we can design and develop in India we will get global competitiveness in technology, cost and quality much faster. That will be our next step - Create in India."

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Currently, only the top-spec diesel variants of the Ertiga MPV and the sedan Ciaz are offered with Maruti’s own SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology. It is a mild hybrid system that revolves around the integrated starter generator (ISG) and a bigger battery under the hood. The setup helps to run engine start/stop, provide additional power to the engine whenever required, and regenerative braking (in which electricity is generated when the car is coasting/going downhill). It is for this electricity that’s generated that the SHVS equipped cars have a bigger battery.

Manufacturers like Honda and Toyota have been testing vehicles running on Hydrogen fuel in America and Japan. Hydrogen fuel is regarded by many as the fuel of the future. Powering an electric motor, the hydrogen fuel ensures that the car emits absolutely zero emissions. India, as compared US and Japan, is not at par with an infrastructure to support hydrogen powered vehicles and it is due to this reason that the Japanese haven’t brought the same technology here.
