Maruti Suzuki's long-awaited compact crossover, the Ignis, is finally here! Prices start from Rs 4.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and you need to head to a Nexa showroom if you intend to buy one. And if you're wondering which other cars this quirky crossover (it's actually a hatchback with SUV-like traits in terms of looks and ground clearance) competes with, then it's got the Mahindra KUV100 for company apart from the Hyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo. There are four variants to choose from - Sigma, Zeta, Delta, and Alpha - and two engine options - the famed 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, petrol engine and a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder, diesel motor.

The Ignis comes with a number of segment-first features

The petrol engine makes 83PS of peak power and 113Nm of peak torque. The diesel motor churns out 75PS of peak power and 190Nm of peak torque. Both engines are mated to either a five-speed manual or an AMT transmission (only in Zeta and Delta variants). In terms of fuel economy, the petrol motor delivers 20.89kmpl while the diesel engine delivers 26.80kmpl. It has a wheelbase measuring 2,435mm, which is longer than that of the Swift. This should translate into more legroom for the occupants inside the car. The Ignis has a ground clearance of 180mm, which is 10mm more than that of KUV100.

The side profile of Ignis

The Ignis, due to its small footprint, can handle urban driving duties. Due to its ground clearance, it can also tackle speed bumps with ease, making it ideal for our roads. In terms of exterior features, the Ignis comes with LED headlamps with daytime running lights, black alloy wheels, and dual-tone paintjob on some variants aside from a raft of safety features as standard such as dual airbags, ABS and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.

However, the big talk of the town is the car's interior. Inside, the Ignis gets all new switchgear and also a floating display for Maruti Suzuki's own Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system that has Apple CarPlay, Mirror Link and Android Auto functionalities. With so many features, the Ignis makes for a compelling package overall. No wonder then, it's already commanding a waiting period as high as 10-12 weeks on certain variants depending on your city. If bookings are any indication, expect the Ignis to be another superhit car from Maruti Suzuki.
